The Louisville Metro Government, with assistance from LOJIC staff, has started preparing for the 2020 Decennial Census. The Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) is the first program in preparation for the Decennial Census. It is the only opportunity offered to tribal, state, and local governments to review and comment on the U.S. Census Bureau's residential address list for their jurisdiction prior to the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau relies on a complete and accurate address list to reach every living quarters and associated population for inclusion in the census.
Coordination with the Jefferson County League of Cities is important to make sure that all addresses and group quarters are identified and provided to the Census Bureau to insure a complete count. It is vital that everyone in our community is counted because it determines how congressional seats are apportioned, how state and federal dollars are distributed, and where businesses choose to build stores, offices and factories.
Louisville Metro will be providing addresses for all of Jefferson County but some other cities in Jefferson County have elected to provided addresses as well. To help all cities within Jefferson County access addresses and incorporated boundary lines, LOJIC is provided two important resources.
- Updated Jefferson County Address Points data on the LOJIC Open Data portal at http://data.lojic.org/datasets/jefferson-county-ky-address-points. This data is available for free download as a spreadsheet, KML for use in Google, or shapefile for use in GIS software. It can be filtered or queried using the MUNI_NAME column to select addresses for a specific city.
- Incorporated City Boundaries are viewable in the LOJIC Online Map at https://www.lojic.org/lojic-online. This interactive map is available for free to view the boundaries that are currently on file with the Secretary of State – Kentucky Land Records Office. This office will be providing incorporated city boundaries to the Census Bureau for the State of Kentucky for the 2020 Decennial Census.
